Storm-Related Roofing Scams

A roofing contractor knocks on your door offering to inspect your roof for storm damage. They say they can help you get a roof replacement covered by insurance, and they try to persuade you, the homeowner, to sign some long form with lots of legal jargon. Does this sound familiar?

What they are trying to do is get you to sign away your right to file the claim yourself while giving them a limited power of attorney. The contractor then files a fraudulent damage claim, and when the insurance company says no, the contractor sues your insurance company on your behalf. The insurance company usually settles the disputed claim for many times more than the original claim. Most of that money goes to the contractor’s lawyer in the form of a “contingency fee multiplier.” Some lawyers file hundreds of these lawsuits a year. At the end of the day, you *may* get a free roof, but everyone, including you, ends up paying for it through increased insurance rates.

If a roofing contractor is desperate enough to come to your door unsolicited, it is reasonable to question if they really have your best interests at heart – or are just trying to line their own pockets. At Alvarez Roofing, we do not and would never participate in these kinds of practices. We are a reputable family owned and operated roofing company that has been in business over 30 years, mostly through word-of-mouth. If you would like an honest estimate of your roof free of charge, we are happy to do so. You can get started by filling out our free estimate form or calling us at (813) 986-4527.
